United States to Italy?
When is the best time to buy a plane ticket? how far in advance?
Where is the best city to fly out of in the US or Canada (east coast) and where to fly into (would like to start either in rome or milan (kind of work my way down or up))
I hear if you sit at the airport you can get discounted air fare because they are trying to fill seats. is that true?
Suggestions as to where to go in Italy (open to all cities)

4-6 months in advance usually gives you the best rate
Sometimes buying 2 one way ticket is cheaper than a round trip ticket, on the other hand, sometimes one one way ticket is more expensive than a round trip ticket.
Statravel and studentuniverse have great fares for people under 25.
Otherwise buying from a company like travelocity or orbitz usually gets you a better fare than buying from the airline.
For flights from NY, I’ve found that flying to Rome is cheaper than Milan. Also, flying from NY should be the cheapest because it is the biggest airport on the east coast.
Try flying Air Canada from Toronto to Rome, Good prices…Also US airways from Philly into Rome. Try to avoid Continental because they seem to be more expensive and trry to avoid all the airports from NY. Also you might try to check out EUROFLY, very cheap flights into Italy. Good luck…..
Vist Rome, Verona, Padova and of course Venice.
To me, 4-6 months is way too far in advance. I have booked great deals just a few weeks ahead. Be flexible with the days you can fly! Use kayak.com for airfare and hotels.
I personally flew to London first, and then got a very cheap ticket from there to Rome. In America, buying a fare at the airport that day will be VERY expensive.
I loved the cliffs in Sorrento, and I would suggest that you not miss Florence. See both the Uffizi and the Accademia there. Take the 110 bus in Rome, but don’t go on the Archeobus. I found it boring. But the 110 bus was great for getting to all the sites, plus it was fun just to ride!
